WINTER WORKSHOP SERIES - CELEBRATING THE DOMESTIC ARTS

We are sponsoring a series of workshops in February and March designed to counter the winter doldrums.

March 1st from 2 - 4pm
“Sculpting Wool”

Learn to work with a new medium, using wool to felt beads, ornaments or other decorative objects.  You will experiment with a new texture and a variety of colors to bring home a masterpiece in felt.  Amy Gillingham from Wild Roots Farm in Livingston Manor will show you how felt is made and fashioned into objects of use and beauty.  Create a late winter jewel to take home.

March 8th from 2 – 4 pm
“Making Simple Salves”

Your garden and surrounding fields offer opportunities to harvest and create simple, soothing “organic” salves.  Maria Grimaldi of Panther Rock Organic Farm in Youngsville will show you how to make a Calendula Balm in this workshop.  Say goodbye to chapped lips and skin with the balm you will take home.

March 15th from 1 – 4 pm
“Making Soap – the Essentials”

Marie D'Antoni of Moxie Alley Soaps in Livingston Manor will demonstrate how to make a simple olive oil soap using the cold process method.  She’ll discuss various methods of making soaps and will share a few secrets and recipes.  No knowledge of chemistry required!  You will go home with a bar of hand made soap and ideas for making your own.

March 22 &  April 5–  a workshop in two parts
2-4 pm

"Bringing the Landscape Indoors"

March is ending, and winter seems to creep to an end. To remind ourselves of the natural beauty in our winter landscape, Carolyn Duke of Duke Pottery in Fremont Center will guide you through the process of hand building a mug, bowl or special pot using imprints from winter greenery and other natural objects.  In this first part of a two-part workshop, you will build your piece.  Carolyn will then bisque fire them in her studio, and you will return on April 5th to learn to use glazes and paint your piece.  Firing fees will be an additional $.06 per cubic inch. Spring will be upon us when the piece has its final high-firing, and you will leave with a memento of late winter.

March 29th from 2-4 pm
“The Language and Art of Flowers”

This workshop will begin with a presentation on the language of flowers as practiced in history.  Helena Clare Pittman will then lead you in creating a composition with a floral or historical theme.  You can study the structure of a single flower or create a still life from vintage objects.  Bring a sketchpad, watercolors, pencils or another medium.  Helena is an award-winning author and illustrator of children’s books.  She has taught at SUNY – Farmingdale, Hofstra University, Queens College and Parsons School of Design.  She currently teaches as Nassau County Museum of Art and at Duke Pottery.

Fee is $20 per class, materials and handouts included.  The pottery workshops count as two classes.  If you register for three or more classes, you will receive a 10 percent discount.  Class size is limited, so please call 845-482-3333 or email cuttinggarden@hotmail.com to register.

Domesticities & The Cutting Garden is located at 4055 Rte 52 in Youngsville, NY    845-482-3333

February 16th from 2-4pm
“Dying Textiles with Natural Materials”

Learn to prepare natural fiber textiles to accept dyes using dried or fresh flowers, berries, roots and other botanicals.  Take home a vintage napkin or doily that you have dyed yourself.  Maria Grimaldi from Panther Rock Organic Farm in Youngsville will lead you through the process.
